WHAT TO DO IF A CHILD KNOCKS A TOOTH OUT.

It’s school holidays so children will be riding their bikes and running around enjoying themselves – but accidents do happen.
Here is what to do if your child loses a tooth accidentally :-
  1. Stay Calm.
  2. Find the tooth and gently rinse with clean water or cold milk to remove any large dirt particles.
  3. Avoid scraping or touching the root and hold the tooth by the crown – the top bit that sticks out of the gum.
  4. Replace the tooth as quickly as possible with the root going into the socket first and the crown pointing into the mouth. (Place as far into the socket as possible until level with the other teeth, a child will normally stop you as it will be sore before it is fully seated into place.)
  5. Keep the tooth in place by asking the child to bite on a piece of cloth.
  6. Seek immediate dental treatment with your dentist, the Emergency Dental Service (NEDS) or go to the Accident and Emergency Unit as soon as possible.

If you cannot replace the tooth at the site of injury:

  • Avoid scraping the root, put the tooth in a moist environment (preferably some cold milk) and arrive as soon as possible at the dentist for consultation and treatment.
