Safe Tooth Whitening

In May 2013 THE HIGH COURT ruled that Tooth Whitening procedures are classed as Dentistry.

Non-dental professionals performing Tooth Whitening treatments are liable to prosecution.  Since this legislation was introduced a beautician has now been prosecuted for practicing dentistry without being registered with the General Dental Council, setting a precendent for the future prosecution of those performing illegal tooth whitening procedures.

For many years concerns have been raised over Tooth Whitening treatments being performed by non-dental professionals such as beauty therapists.

The legislation makes it clear that if you want Tooth Whitening treatment you need to go to the dentist.

This legislation has been set into place to protect patients from these practices by bringing Tooth Whitening (Bleaching) firmly and solely under the remit of the dental profession.

A new webiste  (www.safetoothwhitening.org)  has been launched which aims to inform the public about the importance of safe tooth whitening, and also explain the illegality of treatment being provided by non-dental professionals.

The site can also be used by members of the public to report non-dental professionals who are carrying out whitening treatments, or illegally selling whitening products.
