Pit & Fissure Sealants For Children

Sealants are used to protect childrens teeth from decay.

It is a safe and painless procedure whereby a sealant is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant hardens to form a protective shield keeping food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Sealants usually last for many years although the dentist will check them regularly to make sure the seal is intact.

A sealant can be applied as soon as the permanent teeth start to come through, generally beginning from the age of 6 and 7 until all permanent teeth have erupted between the age of 11 and 14.

Children must still clean their teeth thoroughly using a fluoride toothpaste.

The pit & Fissure sealant reduces the number of fillings your child might need.

If you would like to know more about the treatment ask your dentist or hygienist. They will advise you on whether this procedure will help your childs teeth and if it is the right time to do it.
