NEW TOOTH WHITENING LAWS

The new legislation regarding the new Tooth Whitening laws will come into effect on 31st October 2012.

For many years concerns have been raised over Tooth Whitening treatments being performed by non-dental professionals such as beauty therapists.

This legislation has been set into place to protect patients from these practices by bringing Tooth Whitening (Bleaching) firmly and solely under the remit of the dental profession.

The legislation makes it clear that if you want Tooth Whitening treatment you need to go to the dentist.

This new legislation will affect consumers wishing to whiten their teeth in the following ways:

Firstly the new law recognises that Tooth Whitening is the practice of dentistry.

Products containing or releasing a concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide of less than 0.1 per cent can legally be purchased over the counter for use at home.

Products containing or releasing a concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide of between 0.1 per cent and 6.0 per cent can not be used on any person under 18 years of age.

Tooth Whitening products containing Hydrogen Peroxide of between 0.1 per cent and 6 per cent should be sold to dental practitioners only.

Tooth Whitening products containing Hydrogen Peroxide of between 0.1 per cent and 6 per cent will be legal for Tooth Whitening providing that a dentist performs an initial examination and carries out the first treatment. After this the dentist can supply the product to the patient so that they can complete the course of treatment at home.

Any non dental professionals performing Tooth Whitening treatments will be liable to prosecution.
