Help My Dentist Says I Need Root Canal Treatment??

Ive been told I need Root Canal Treatment and Im scared, Ive been told its really painful is this true? and why do i need it?

This is a common reaction when patients are told they need Root Canal Treatment.

We have all heard the frightening tales told by friends or colleagues of how terrible this treatment is so now is the time to put the record straight!

Root Canal Treatment does not hurt! It is a routine dental procedure.

Root Canal Treatment is needed when the nerve of a tooth is infected.  This can happen because of decay or injury and often leads to a dental abscess.

If Root Canal Treatment is not done, the infection will spread and you may end up having the tooth taken out!

You will usually be given a local anaesthetic and the treatment will feel no different to having an ordinary filling…although the treatment will involve 2 or more visits to your dentist.

The first appointment will involve the dentist cleaning out the root canal (the space in the centre of the tooth)and shaping it in preparation for the filling.  The dentist will place a temporary filling and then leave the tooth to settle down.

At the next appointment the dentist will check whether the infection has cleared and may clean the canals again if there is any infection remaining.

When the infection is completely cleared the dentist will place a permanent filling.

Following Root Canal Treatment the tooth will be dead and may be more brittle.

You may need to have the tooth restored with a crown to give it extra strength and support.

There may be some tenderness in the area afterwards (not pain) and this will usually subside within 7 to 10 days.

Root treated teeth should be looked after in exactly the same way as all of your other teeth.

It is important to always ask your dentist to explain your treatment options fully before starting a course of treatment.  You need to understand the pro’s and con’s of treatments in order to make an informed decision about which course of treatment is best for you.

At Tavistock Drive Dental Care we provide you with all of the treatment options available to you, we also give you a full written estimate for the cost of treatment.

We do not pressure you into making a decision there and then, we are happy to let you go away and consider your options before you decide what is best for you.
