Not only is a dry mouth uncomfortable and sometimes painful, it can affect your dental health. Saliva is essential to neutralise plaque acids that can cause tooth decay.

Plaque is a sticky soft bacterial deposit that sticks to your teeth close to the gum line and between the teeth.

When you eat foods which contain sugars and starches bacteria produce plaque acids, which if not removed can dissolve the enamel on your teeth or combine with minerals to harden and form tartar deposits.

Plaque will always be produced, but with careful brushing, flossing and/or use of inter-dental brushes you can minimise it’s effects on your oral health.

Regular chewing of a sugar free gum after eating, can also help to reduce the amount of plaque.

Brush your teeth twice a day, use inter-dental aids and visit us at Tavistock Drive Dental Care regularly for advice on controlling this problem.  0115 9602717.
