Bleeding Gums Linked to Cancer Risk

A large-scale study by Imperial College London found that people with gum disease are 14% more likely to develop cancer.

Gum disease has already been linked to a many serious health conditions including heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and premature births and now that it could increase a person’s cancer risk is a big concern.

The latest National Dental Survey has shown that people in the UK need to improve their oral healthcare routines. 15% of people are brushing less than twice a day and 29% brush for less than a minute and this will drastically increase their gum disease risk.

Oral health is often thought to be of less importance than general health but that is not the case. The mouth and the body are part of the same system and need to be taken looked after in the same way.

National Smile Month is running from May 18 to June 17 with the theme ‘Brush for Health’ being used to raise awareness of the links between the mouth and the body.
