Bleeding Gums Linked to Cancer Risk
March 18th, 2011Bleeding gums must flag a warning to you, Bleeding gums are caused by gum disease and studies have revealed that @ 29% of the population suffer from Bleeding Gums.
A large-scale study by Imperial College London found that people with gum disease are 14% more likely to develop cancer.
Gum disease has already been linked to a many serious health conditions including heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and premature births and now that it could increase a person’s cancer risk is a big concern.
The latest National Dental Survey has shown that people in the UK need to improve their oral healthcare routines. 15% of people are brushing less than twice a day and 29% brush for less than a minute and this will drastically increase their gum disease risk.
Oral health is often thought to be of less importance than general health but that is not the case. The mouth and the body are part of the same system and need to be taken looked after in the same way.
National Smile Month is running from May 18 to June 17 with the theme ‘Brush for Health’ being used to raise awareness of the links between the mouth and the body.

Improve Your Smile With Dental Implants
January 14th, 2011Its a New Year and you may be considering ways of improving your smile which can dramatically improve your appearance and confidence. One of your options may be Dental Implants.
So what is a Dental Implant? and why has the trend for dental implants grown rapidly over the past few years?
An implant involves having a screw surgically placed into your jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or denture in place. The screw acts as a root for the tooth and fuses with the living bone to form a strong foundation onto which the crown, denture or bridge is placed.
There are many benefits to having replacement teeth fixed into your jawbone this way such as:
Improve your appearance and your self confidence.
Eliminate the need for removable dentures completely.
Increased denture self confidence, improved speech, appearance and chewing ability.
Remove the need to involve adjacent teeth in the construction of a bridge therefore preserving healthy tooth tissue.
If you are considering dental implants and would like more advice why not then call the surgery on 0115 9602717 to make an appointment and find out more today.

Tobacco and your Teeth.
October 19th, 2010Smoking can make you four times as likely to develop oral cancer and it is not just older adults that are affected.
Tobacco is also responsible for Bad Breath, Stained Teeth, Bone Loss, Shrinking Gums, Mouth Sores, Reduced sense of Taste and Smell and Poor Healing of Mouth Sores to name but a few.
Tobacco contains substances which are harmful to your body’s cells and tissues. Smokers have more calculus (hardened plaque) than non-smokers. A build up of calculus can lead to Periodontal Disease and the loss of teeth.
The Nicotine in Tobacco causes the narrowing of the blood vessels. The blood circulation has been shown to decease by up to 70% in your mouth whilst smoking a cigarette, and Tobacco smoking also affects your body’s immune system.
With these statistics in mind it is imperative that you visit a Dentist regularly for routine Examinations and Scale and Polish appointments.

Think about the Sugar. .
October 19th, 2010Did you know that the average can of pop contains up to 10 teaspoons of sugar? and natural sugars (those found in raisins and fruit for example) are no better for your teeth.
Sugar is sugar and the acid attack which follows the consumption of sugary snacks can last for up to 20 minutes.
Try swapping these snacks and drinks for dairy products such as cheese, milk and yoghurt. Milk based products contain calcium essential for healthy teeth and bone development.
Brush and floss twice a day. Many people dont realise that failing to use floss can result in missing cleaning up to a third of each tooth. Just ask your dentist or hygienist if you are unsure of how to floss correctly.
Anyone can be affected by Mouth Cancer
September 13th, 2010Anyone can be affected by Mouth Cancer and it can begin in many different forms, for example a painless mouth ulcer that doesn’t heal normally or a white or red patch in the mouth.
Mouth Cancer can affect all parts of your mouth, tongue and lips.
It can often be detected early by your dentist during your routine examination. If cancer is recognised early then the chances of a complete cure are good. Many people go to their dentist or doctor too late.
Make sure your mouth stays healthy by following some simple steps:
Visit your dentist at least once a year for examinations even if you wear dentures.
Look out for any changes in your mouth and report any ulcers, red or white patches that have not cleared up within 3 weeks.
Remember to use a barrier cream on your lips when exposed to the sun.
A healthy diet rich in vitamins A, C and E provides protection from the development of mouth cancer. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables to help your body protect itself.
Cut down on smoking and drinking.
REGULAR VISITS TO YOUR DENTIST COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!!
